Award-winning Afrobeats star Great Adamz released ‘Blessed Boy’ eight months ago, and it’s continuing to make waves across the genre and beyond. Combined with Afro-hall and a talent for uplifting lyricism, this infectious album has been revived by the dance trend-fuelled ‘Funke’, millions of streams, and the beginning of festival season - where he’ll appear at Latitude Festival with his energetic live band, ‘The 99.’

We chatted to Great about ‘Blessed Boy,’ his artistic evolution, future plans, and what it truly means to feel blessed…

Great, you’ve had a remarkable rise in the Afrobeats scene, especially with your debut album Blessed Boy. Can you share what the journey has been like from when you first started making music to where you are now? What has been the biggest lesson you've learned so far?

The journey has been nothing short of incredible. I started making music out of pure passion, just vibing in the studio, and now seeing Blessed Boy resonate with so many people is a dream come true. From recording in small setups to hitting #2 on iTunes Nigeria, it’s been a grind, but every moment has been worth it.

The biggest lesson I've learned is patience and consistency. Nothing happens overnight, and staying true to my sound while putting in the work has been key. Also, the importance of a solid team—having people who believe in the vision makes all the difference.

We love lead single ‘Fantastic.’ Can you talk to us about the inspiration behind the song? What was the creative process like, and how does it tie into the themes of your debut album?

I wrote Fantastic from a very loving place - I wanted to create something sweet, something that people could vibe to all year long. It’s feel-good music, pure and simple. Whether it’s summer or winter, this is the kind of song that lifts your mood and makes you want to enjoy life.

After the music video dropped and it hit 1.2 million views on YouTube, I quickly realised just how much people connected with it. Seeing that kind of love made me even more grateful and motivated to keep creating music that brings joy.

How would you describe the evolution of your sound from your early tracks to this new release?

My sound has evolved in a big way. From my early tracks, I always had a strong melodic style, but it wasn’t fully fine-tuned -I was still figuring out what my true sound was. With Blessed Boy, everything clicked. It was like looking into the mirror and finally recognising myself as an artist, feeling good about the image and the music I was creating.

With Fantastic, that confidence shines through even more. It’s smooth, vibrant, and intentional. I’ve learned how to shape my melodies, refine my delivery, and bring out the emotions I want people to feel. Now, my sound isn’t just about making music—it’s about creating a vibe that people can connect with all year long

How does it feel to see your hard work resonate with so many people, and what does success look like to you?

It’s an incredible feeling. Seeing my hard work resonate with so many people, knowing that my music is bringing joy, vibes, and connection—it’s the best reward. When I see people streaming my songs, sharing them, singing along at shows, or even just telling me how much a track means to them, it reminds me why I do this.

Success, to me, is more than just numbers—it’s about impact. Of course, hitting milestones like millions of streams and charting high is amazing, but true success is knowing that my music is part of people’s lives. It’s when someone hears a song like Fantastic and it becomes the soundtrack to their best memories. As long as I keep making music that moves people, that’s success to me.

You’ve mentioned that Blessed Boy is not just a musical debut but a reflection of your personal growth. Can you expand on that? What does the phrase "feeling blessed" mean to you, and how does it translate into the music you create?

Blessed Boy isn’t just a debut album—it’s a reflection of everything I’ve been through, my growth as an artist, and the person I’ve become. When I say ‘feeling blessed,’ it goes beyond just good things happening to me—it’s about the journey, the struggles, the lessons, and the people who’ve supported me along the way. I’ve come a long way, and I’m grateful for everything, even the hard times, because they’ve shaped who I am today.

For me, ‘feeling blessed’ is acknowledging that you’ve been given opportunities and experiences, and you don’t take any of it for granted. It’s about gratitude, recognizing your worth, and being at peace with who you are. That energy flows into the music I create—it’s about spreading positive vibes, giving people something to hold onto, and making music that reflects the fullness of life. That’s why Blessed Boy is so personal—it’s me saying, ‘I’ve made it this far, and I’m thankful for the journey

The album balances both introspection and celebration. How did you manage to capture that balance of blessings and struggles in your music, and what message do you hope listeners take away from the project?

I think life is full of both blessings and challenges, and as an artist, it felt important to reflect that reality in my music. The celebratory tracks are there to remind people of the good, the wins, and the beauty of life. Meanwhile, the introspective songs provide space to reflect, heal, and understand the process behind growth.

The message I want listeners to take away from Blessed Boy is that no matter where you’re at in life, you’re not alone. Everyone has their battles, but with faith, perseverance, and a little bit of joy, we can push through and reach our own blessings. It’s a reminder that growth isn’t just about the destination—it’s about embracing the journey, with all its ups and downs

You’ve received accolades such as the Golden Star Award in 2021 and recognition in the prestigious MOBO Award Unsung Class of 2022. How has being acknowledged in this way influenced your confidence as an artist, and what do these awards mean to you personally?

Personally, these awards mean more than just accolades—they symbolise the growth and progress I’ve made as an artist. They represent the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices that have gone into creating my music. Being recognised by these prestigious platforms reminds me that I'm not just making music for myself—I'm making music that resonates with people and that has the potential to leave a mark. It pushes me to keep going, to continue evolving, and to aim higher with every project

You’ve mentioned your realisation that everything you have right now, you once prayed for. Do you think that mindset of gratitude and contentment has changed the way you approach your music? How does it affect the stories you tell through your songs?

I’ve come to realize that focusing too much on what I plan to achieve can sometimes prevent me from truly appreciating what I have right now. When you’re always chasing the next goal, it’s easy to lose sight of the blessings in front of you. Gratitude, for me, has been a game-changer. It’s about taking a step back and recognizing how far I’ve come, rather than always looking ahead to what’s next.

Being present and grateful for the now allows me to truly enjoy the journey and the milestones I’ve already hit. It’s not about achieving more for the sake of it—it’s about enjoying the process, being content, and celebrating the wins, big or small. That’s something I try to reflect in my music too, whether I’m talking about personal growth or just appreciating life’s simple moments

Looking to the future, what are your biggest aspirations both musically and personally?

Personally, I want to stay grounded, continue to learn, and give back in meaningful ways. I’ve been blessed to be where I am, and I want to use my platform to help others, whether it’s through mentorship, charity work, or supporting the next generation of artists. Family, peace of mind, and living authentically are also important to me. Ultimately, my goal is to keep balancing my growth as an artist with staying true to who I am as a person.

What’s one thing about you as an artist that people might not know yet but that you’re excited to share with your fans as your career continues to evolve?

One thing people might not know yet is that I’m always working on new ways to express myself beyond just music. I’ve always been interested in other forms of creativity—whether it’s visual arts, fashion, or even storytelling through other mediums. As my career evolves, I’m excited to share more of those sides of myself with my fans. I want to keep expanding the way I connect with people, not just through my music but also through the stories, visuals, and concepts that accompany it. I think as I continue to grow, people will see a more well-rounded version of me as an artist, someone who’s not afraid to try new things and step outside the box.
